MALAGUEIRA

Bairro da Malagueira arose from a challenge launched by the Évora Council to the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, in the late 1970s, to respond to the lack of housing in the city. Located close to the historic center, it has 1200 rooms and occupies an area of 27 hectares. Work began in 1977 and lasted for 20 years. It is considered one of the most emblematic projects by Álvaro Siza Vieira (Pritzker Prize 1992), even though it remains unfinished. A 50-minute documentary, “Malagueira” takes us on a journey through the history of the neighborhood and who inhabits it today.
